Privacy Policy
Effective Date: February 15, 2026
Last Updated: February 15, 2026
Overview
Cited is a browser extension that analyzes web pages for AI citation readiness. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data Cited accesses, how it is used, and — critically — what it does not do.
What Data Cited Accesses
When you click the Cited extension icon on a web page, the extension reads the following from the active tab:
- Page content: Text, headings, links, images, and HTML structure
- Metadata: Title tags, meta descriptions, Open Graph tags, and canonical URLs
- Structured data: JSON-LD schema markup embedded in the page
- Public site files: robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and llms.txt from the website's domain root
This data is used solely to calculate your GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) score.
How Data Is Processed
- All analysis runs locally in your browser. Your page data is never transmitted to any external server, API, or third party.
- Analysis results are temporarily cached in your browser's local extension storage for up to 1 hour to avoid redundant re-analysis. Cached data is automatically purged after expiration.
- A maximum of 200 cached entries are stored at any time. Oldest entries are removed first if this limit is reached.
What Cited Does NOT Do
- No data is sent to external servers. Zero. The extension makes no network requests except to the website you are actively analyzing (to fetch its public robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and llms.txt files).
- No analytics or tracking. Cited does not use Google Analytics, telemetry, beacons, or any form of usage tracking.
- No personal information is collected. Cited does not access your browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, cookies, form inputs, or any data from tabs other than the one you explicitly analyze.
- No third-party services. Cited has zero external dependencies and communicates with no third-party APIs.
- No advertising. Cited does not display ads or share data with advertisers.
Permissions Explained
Cited requests the following browser permissions, each for a specific purpose:
- activeTab — To read the content of the page you choose to analyze (only when you click the extension icon)
- scripting — To inject the content extraction script into the active tab for analysis
- storage — To cache analysis results locally in your browser for up to 1 hour
- Host permissions (all URLs) — To analyze any website you visit — Cited works on all sites, not just a predefined list
Data Retention
- Cached analysis results expire automatically after 1 hour.
- No long-term data is stored.
- Uninstalling the extension removes all cached data.
Security
- Cited is built on Chrome's Manifest V3 platform, which enforces strict Content Security Policy defaults.
- The extension contains zero external dependencies, eliminating supply chain risk.
- The content script operates in read-only mode — it extracts data from pages but never modifies them.
- All UI rendering uses safe DOM construction methods with no innerHTML usage.
Children's Privacy
Cited does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
If we update this privacy policy, we will revise the "Last Updated" date above. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
